Holy Spirit, the Counselor; John 14-17

May the mumbling commence!
Today, we start a thirty day journey with the gospel according to John chapters fourteen through seventeen.  It is the discourse that Jesus has with his disciples before he leaves them.  For those of you who have Bibles where the words of Jesus are marked in red, these four chapters are almost entirely in red.  I guess we better pay attention!
What can we learn about the Holy Spirit in this four chapter stretch?  One thing we learn is that the Holy Spirit is our Counselor that guides us into truth.  Read from John chapter fourteen (NIV):
"If you love me, you will obey what I command.  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever – the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.  I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.  Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.” (Verses 15-19)
How do we find our way to the Spirit of Truth?  We love Jesus, and we show our love by obedience to what Jesus commands.  Love and obedience are key to finding the Counselor – the one who will lead us to the truth.
When we are on that journey, the people of the world will think we are quite confused.  They do not see this Counselor Spirit, and because they cannot see it they cannot believe it.  Because they do not believe it they do not know this Counselor Spirit.
But we do know this Spirit.  This spirit lives with us and abides in us.  Though Jesus no longer walks the earth in human form, we are not orphans.  We can still see the impact of Jesus through this Counselor Spirit.  And seeing means life.  Seeing means vibrant life.
Guide us, O Great Counselor!
Enough mumbling for now…
Peace Out
