Eternal Life and Heaven; John 17-19

May the mumbling commence!

By now, many people have read the book Heaven is For Real.  If you haven’t read it, you most likely have heard of it.  The book tells the real life story of a young boy who nearly died from a ruptured appendix.  The book is an interesting read.  It talks about possible answers for a question that has long been asked: What will heaven be like?

There are many different thoughts on what heaven will be like.  Heaven is For Real talks about heaven as a reunion with loved ones who have passed on.  That is one possibility.  Other people picture a cloudy space with angels playing harps.  Some other people picture heaven as a place where the greatest dreams and fantasies come true.

But, what does the Bible say about heaven?  Better yet, what does Jesus say about heaven?  Read how Jesus talks about eternal life in John chapter seventeen:

When Jesus had said these words, he raised his eyes to Heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son now so that he may bring glory to you, for you have given him authority over all men to give eternal life for all that you have given to him. And this is eternal life, to know you, the only true God, and him whom you have sent – Jesus Christ. (Verses 1-3)

Eternal life is to know God and God’s Son, Jesus Christ.  Heaven is about knowing Christ Jesus and God the Father fully.  Heaven is about fully knowing our Creator and being fully known.  Heaven is about doing what God created us to do with the purpose of praising God.

It has not been so long ago that we read the letter Revelation.  Revelation describes heaven again and again as something like a ongoing worship service.  In heaven, worshiping God will consume us.

Does this mean that I do not believe in a reunion with our dead loved ones?  I wouldn’t say that.  There is some evidence that we will recognize one another in heaven and even meet our fabled ancestors of the past.

However, I do not think that being reunited with loved ones will mean as much to us as we might think.  The overwhelming feeling and focus of heaven will be on the Lord God.  To know God and to know Jesus will be so wonderful that all else will be paled in comparison.

Yes, heaven is for real.  Jesus is the way.  Let us trod down that path so that we may know God and Jesus better and so that we may be known.

We were created for relationship with each other and with God.  What could make a better heaven than fully knowing and being fully known by God?

Let us join the chorus of praise until we can enter into the eternal worship hall of heaven.

Enough mumbling for now…

Peace Out
