A Match Made in Heaven. Genesis 24:62-67

May the mumbling commence!

Husband and wife meet for the first time.  Talk about butterflies the size of eagles!  Yet the Lord was in this as well.  Read from Peterson’s The Message:

Isaac was living in the Negev.  He had just come back from a visit to Beer Lahai Roi.  In the evening he went out into the field; while meditating he looked up and saw camels coming.  When Rebekah looked up and saw Isaac, she got down from her camel and asked the servant, “Who is that man out in the field coming toward us?”
            “That is my master.”
She took her veil and covered herself.
After the servant told Isaac the whole story of the trip, Isaac took Rebekah into the tent of his mother Sarah.  He married Rebekah and she became his wife and he loved her.  So Isaac found comfort after his mother’s death.  (Genesis 24:62-67)

Now read the same passage from the NIV translation:

Now Isaac had come from Beer Lahai Roi, for he was living in the Negev.  He went out to the field one evening to meditate, and as he looked up, he saw camels approaching.  Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel and asked the servant, "Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?"
"He is my master," the servant answered. So she took her veil and covered herself.
Then the servant told Isaac all he had done.  Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.  (Genesis 24:62-67)

There’s not a whole lot of red in this passage.  The only difference I feel called to point out is that the NIV gives us the sense that Rebekah knew that they young man was coming to meet them… not simply coming toward them.  She somehow knew, and she was likely quaking in her sandals.

The butterflies were just as big for Isaac.  His father’s servant took time to tell him everything that had happened when he was gone.  Isaac was satisfied and accepted her into his mother’s tent.  Isaac was staying in his mother’s tent.  He missed her so.

And Isaac loved Rebekah and finally received comfort after his mother’s death.  Isaac had a new woman in his life, and she was equally lovely as his mother.  Though it was an arranged marriage, it was arranged by God.  There was no better match for Isaac than this woman of strong and simple faith.

Praise God!

Enough mumbling for now…

Peace Out
