Don't Battle God. Ecclesiastes 7-8; Second John

May the mumbling commence!

There’s one battle we can never win.  Don’t fight God.  You’ll lose.

Instead, notice and follow God’s ways.  As the Teacher of Ecclesiastes says in chapter seven:

Notice the way God does things; then fall into line. Don't fight the ways of God, for who can straighten out what he has made crooked? (Verse 13)

And noticing God’s ways and following them is a life-long process.  We can never know all of God’s ways – no matter how hard we labor.  Read from Ecclesiastes chapter eight:

In my search for wisdom, I tried to observe everything that goes on all across the earth. I discovered that there is ceaseless activity, day and night.  This reminded me that no one can discover everything God has created in our world, no matter how hard they work at it. Not even the wisest people know everything, even if they say they do. (Verses 16-17)

O Holy Spirit, keep us humble and teachable.  It is the essence of living well.  Teach us Your Way, O God!  And that way is the way of loving right relationships.  Read from Second John:

And now I want to urge you, dear lady, that we should love one another. This is not a new commandment, but one we had from the beginning.  Love means doing what God has commanded us, and he has commanded us to love one another, just as you heard from the beginning. (Verses 5-6)

The way is clear but difficult.  Let’s travel that path to perfection together.

Enough mumbling for now…

Peace Out

  1. Interesting post. I have been studying Ecclesiastes for a long time but never read it in NLT. Looking up this reference I am finding two alternate readings for the NLT and only on adds the phrase "Don't fight God." Not sure what to make of that but thanks for bringing it out.
