Unison and Harmony. Second Chronicles 4-5; Romans 14

May mumbling commence!

Oh, what a feeling of accomplishment and joy!  There is nothing like finishing a task, worshiping the Lord, and feeling the blessings that the Lord has bestowed upon you.  These thoughts must have been coursing through King Solomon’s mind as he dedicated the Temple.  Just think: the glory of the Lord in cloud form descended on the Temple… much like it had after the Tabernacle was first assembled.  Read from Second Chronicles chapter five:

Then the priests left the Holy Place. All the priests who were present had purified themselves, whether or not they were on duty that day.  And the Levites who were musicians – Asaph, Heman, Jeduthun, and all their sons and brothers – were dressed in fine linen robes and stood at the east side of the altar playing cymbals, harps, and lyres. They were joined by 120 priests who were playing trumpetsThe trumpeters and singers performed together in unison to praise and give thanks to the Lord. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals, and other instruments, they raised their voices and praised the Lord with these words:
"He is so good! His faithful love endures forever!"
At that moment a cloud filled the Temple of the Lord.  The priests could not continue their work because the glorious presence of the Lord filled the Temple of God. (Verses 11-14)

They were purified for worship… so they might make music with instruments and voice (an instrument that God had made for them).  They sang and played in unison.  Harmony is lovely – there is no doubt, but when harmony coalesces into unison – the effect is tremendous.

God is good!  (All the time!)  God’s faithful love endures forever!

And the cloud of the Presence of the Lord descended upon the Temple.  Work stopped.  It was an awe inspiring presence no doubt.  Would that we might feel such a palpable presence of the Lord in our worship!

Help us, O Lord to live a life of goodness, peace and joy.  It is the only way to please You.  Read from Romans chapter fourteen:

For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.  If you serve Christ with this attitude, you will please God. And other people will approve of you, too.  So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up. (Verses 17-19)

You see there is harmony there, too.  Harmony is important – especially when it builds everyone up.  Then harmony can join with unison and make a beautiful sound in the ears of our Lord.

We are different… complementary.  That’s harmony.  Yet there are places where we are the same.  That’s unison.  Either way we complement one another.

So don’t sweat the small stuff.  God will take care of that.  In fact, don’t sweat the big stuff either.  God can take care of that far better than we can.

Let us seek for harmony when we cannot agree.  Let us seek for unison when we can agree.  And, in all things, let us honor and worship and praise our Lord.

Enough mumbling for now…

Peace Out
