May the mumbling commence!
Sin can be deceptive. Sin can look good to our eyes. But sin is the ultimate liar. It distorts the good and hides the evil in the shadows. Read from Romans chapter seven (NRSV):
What then should we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet, if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, "You shall not covet." But sin, seizing an opportunity in the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness.
Apart from the law sin lies dead. I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died, and the very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. For sin, seizing an opportunity in the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.
So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and just and good.
Did what is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, working death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure. (Verses 7-13)
Sin twists what is holy and just and good. Just look at what it did to God’s holy Law! And look at what it does to people, who were made in God’s image. There are many people who are twisted away from the image of God.
And, if it wasn’t for the Law, we would have a hard time really seeing the sinfulness of sin. It is deadly in its beautiful deception. There is much more than feeling right. Many sins may feel good at the first. There is much more.
There is doing right. And the Law tries to help us to do right. But sin weakens us so that we cannot do right.
Ah, we need a Savior!
Thank God for Jesus! Thank God for the life and teachings and death and resurrection of Jesus. They show us the Way to obedience. Let us take that path together!
Enough mumbling for now…
Peace Out
