May
the mumbling commence!
You
have probably at the very least heard of the Purpose-Driven Church. So,
what should our purpose be… generally speaking?
We can read about this general purpose in Ephesians chapter three (NIV):
This
mystery is that through the
gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one
body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.
I
became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the
working of his power. Although I am less
than the least of all God’s people, this grace was given me; to preach to the
Gentiles the unsearchable riches in Christ, and to make
plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which
for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. His intent was that now, through
the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and
authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ
Jesus our Lord. In him and through faith in him we may approach
God with freedom and confidence.
(Verses 6-12)
Our
mission, if we choose to accept it, is to be revealers of God’s great
mystery. All those walls that we have
spent generations and generations to build up between each other are as to
nothing to the power of God through Christ Jesus. No more walls separate the people of God in Christ
Jesus!
Our
mission, if we choose to accept it, is to be broadcasters for the manifold
wisdom of God. How does this broadcast
get off the ground and to the world? Whenever
we overcome our differences in Christ, we broadcast this wisdom. Whenever we transform our differences from
liabilities to assets, we broadcast this wisdom.
And
the people of the earth are not the only ones paying attention to how diverse
peoples worship God together. Rulers and
authorities in heaven are watching. Let
us step together with care!
And,
as we step together, let us approach God with freedom and confidence to be equipped
to do so… knowing that the ability to do such things lies not in ourselves but
in the empowerment of the Holy Spirit of God.
That
is a general mission… if we choose to accept it.
Enough
mumbling for now…
Peace
Out
