Knowing Mystery; First John

May the mumbling commence!

Though we do not fully know ourselves at this point, we are fully known.  We are fully known by God.  And our Lord calls us His children.  That should be good enough for us!  Read from the NRSV translation and from First John chapter three:

See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.  Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is.  And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. (Verses 1-3)

Let’s think about the levels of knowing (or not knowing) that are found in this passage.  At ground zero, the people of the world will not even recognize us – because we have chosen Christ’s Way.

The second level, our own personal recognition is not complete either.  We are waiting patiently (or at times impatiently) for our true natures to be revealed.  In fact, the better that we know our Lord Jesus Christ, the better we will be able to understand our nature as God’s children.  It is a mystery that we should cherish.

One day, our knowledge of Christ will be complete.  We put our hope in this fact and wait expectantly.  As we hope, God purifies us.  This purification is at times a long and painful process.  Let us trust in our Creator to mold us in the shape that He first intended.  That shape in that of the obedience and love of Christ Jesus.

The third level of knowing exists with God.  God knows all creation completely.  Oh, course!  If you create something, you would know it better than anyone else.

Thank you, O God, for welcoming us into Your family.  Reveal to us our true nature as fast as we can receive it.  Purify us with the fire of Your Holy Spirit.

This is our prayer.  Let it be so.

Enough mumbling for now…

Peace Out
