Gratitude for Story and Song. First Samuel 1-2; John 16

May the mumbling commence!

Story is powerful.  I love to tell the story.  Song is equally as powerful.  It makes a lasting impression on us.  We remember where we were and what we doing and how we were feeling at the moment we first heard a song.

Song helps to tell the story.  It is to a song that I point you this day – the song of Hannah.  The song of Mary (the Magnificat) is an echo of it.  Enjoy Hannah’s song of thankfulness for the birth of her first son, Samuel.  It is found in First Samuel chapter two:

"My heart rejoices in the Lord
       Oh, how the Lord has blessed me!
Now I have an answer for my enemies,
       as I delight in your deliverance.
No one is holy like the Lord
       There is no one besides you;
       there is no Rock like our God.
Stop acting so proud and haughty!
       Don't speak with such arrogance!
The Lord is a God who knows your deeds;
       and he will judge you for what you have done.
Those who were mighty are mighty no more;
       and those who were weak are now strong.
Those who were well fed are now starving;
       and those who were starving are now full.
The barren woman now has seven children;
       but the woman with many children will have no more.
The Lord brings both death and life;
       he brings some down to the grave but raises others up.
The Lord makes one poor and another rich;
       he brings one down and lifts another up.
He lifts the poor from the dust –
       yes, from a pile of ashes!
He treats them like princes,
       placing them in seats of honor.
For all the earth is the Lord's,
       and he has set the world in order.
He will protect his godly ones,
       but the wicked will perish in darkness.
No one will succeed by strength alone.
Those who fight against the Lord will be broken.
He thunders against them from heaven;
       the Lord judges throughout the earth.
He gives mighty strength to his king;
       he increases the might of his anointed one." (Verses 1b-10)

The song begins with the praise of the Lord.  Hallelujah!  Let’s remember to always start from the place of worship and gratitude.

Leave your proud and arrogant ways behind for the Lord will judge each of us according to our merits.  Put your pride aside and worship the Lord with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength.

Worship the Lord for God turns the world right-side-up. We may think God turns the world upside-down, but it is only because we have been upside-down for so long that we THINK we are right-side-up.  The mighty are weak, and the weak are mighty.  The well-fed is starving, and the starving is well-fed.  Children are given to the childless, while the couples that have many children have no more.

 Lift us up, O Lord!  We cannot succeed by our strength alone.  Help us not to fight against You, O God.  Let’s join in with how the Spirit of the Living God is moving in our midst.  Let’s give thanks for the work of the Anointed One, the Messiah, Christ the Lord.  Then our weeping will turn to irrepressible joy.  Read from John chapter sixteen:

“Truly, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy when you see me again.  It will be like a woman experiencing the pains of labor. When her child is born, her anguish gives place to joy because she has brought a new person into the world.  You have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy. (Verses 20-22)

Praise God!  Hallelujah!

Enough mumbling for now…

Peace Out
