Hot Pursuit! Genesis 31-32; Matthew 11

May the mumbling commence!

Days sometimes seem frantic in their activity.  It seems at times that we are in hot pursuit.  But what are we in hot pursuit of?  Do we have the awareness of God that we need when a flurry of activity threatens to overwhelm us?  Read from Genesis chapter thirty-one:

Laban didn't learn of their flight for three days.  But when he did, he gathered a group of his relatives and set out in hot pursuit. He caught up with them seven days later in the hill country of Gilead.  But the previous night God had appeared to Laban in a dream. "Be careful about what you say to Jacob!" he was told.
So when Laban caught up with Jacob as he was camped in the hill country of Gilead, he set up his camp not far from Jacob's.  "What do you mean by sneaking off like this?" Laban demanded. "Are my daughters prisoners, the plunder of war, that you have stolen them away like this?  Why did you slip away secretly? I would have given you a farewell party, with joyful singing accompanied by tambourines and harps.  Why didn't you let me kiss my daughters and grandchildren and tell them good-bye? You have acted very foolishly!  I could destroy you, but the God of your father appeared to me last night and told me, 'Be careful about what you say to Jacob!'  I know you feel you must go, and you long intensely for your childhood home, but why have you stolen my household gods?" (Verses 22-30)

Are we in hot pursuit of what is ours or what we think should be ours, like Laban?  Have our possessions or our desire for more become like household gods to us?

Slow down!  Have some time to dream.  Have some time to listen to the voice of God.  Be careful what you say… what you think... what you say.

May we not seek the secret ways to plunder.  May we not act foolishly only to be selfish.  May we listen to the call of God on our lives.  May we seek the Way of Christ, a Way that was pointed to by John the Baptist.  Read Jesus’ words about John from Matthew chapter eleven:

When John's disciples had gone, Jesus began talking about him to the crowds. "Who is this man in the wilderness that you went out to see? Did you find him weak as a reed, moved by every breath of wind?  Or were you expecting to see a man dressed in expensive clothes? Those who dress like that live in palaces, not out in the wilderness.  Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet.  John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say,
'Look, I am sending my messenger before you,
and he will prepare your way before you.'
I assure you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the most insignificant person in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he is!  And from the time John the Baptist began preaching and baptizing until now, the Kingdom of Heaven has been forcefully advancing, and violent people attack it.  For before John came, all the teachings of the Scriptures looked forward to this present time.  And if you are willing to accept what I say, he is Elijah, the one the prophets said would come.  Anyone who is willing to hear should listen and understand!” (Verses 7-15)

We continue to look for prophets who will help us to see our way to the Kingdom of Heaven that is in our midst… it is forcefully advancing.  Let us join that flow of the Spirit of God… and leave the insignificant ways and wealth of this world.

Enough mumbling for now…

Peace Out
